Coltrane Plays the Blues is an album by John Coltrane, issued in July 1962 by Atlantic Records (SD 1382). The material was recorded earlier at Atlantic Studios during the sessions that produced My Favorite Things. Recorded in October 1960, the album was compiled and released after Coltrane had ended his association with Atlantic and signed with Impulse Records. As had previously occurred with Prestige, Atlantic drew on unreleased recordings from its archives and issued them without Coltrane’s direct involvement or approval, capitalizing on his rising prominence during the 1960s. Personnel: John Coltrane — soprano & tenor saxophoneMcCoy Tyner — piano
